    Roma & Lusaka

    Roma and surrounds
Roma where the lodge is located is an older suburb of Lusaka with well established homes and gardens and roads lined with mature trees. Within 5 minutes drive from Roma Lodge there are restaurants, bars, shops and many other commercial businesses serving the local community.

Roma is a very pretty suburb and is pleasant and safe to walk around during daytime hours. It is safe at night however there is little or no lighting in most streets and no footpaths so walking at night is not recommended.

    Arcades Shopping Centre
Arcades Shopping Mall is a great place to relax with coffee, find a meal or snack, and do some shopping. Arcades hosts a traditional Zambian and African crafts market every Sunday which includes live entertainment throughout the day. Apart from the various retail outlets with clothing, accessories, electronics, and there is a cinema, casino, Spar supermarket, excellent cafes, fast food, and even a fine dining restaurant. There is plenty of parking most times of the day at Arcades except during the Sunday traditional crafts market where it pays to get there early.

    Transport & Currency

    Cabs
Local cabs will charge of around ZMW 20 for a short trip of up to 3kms or so and up to ZMW 80 for longer trips within Lusaka. You can negotiate with drivers to agree on a price for return trips. A cab from Roma Lodge to Lusaka centre should not cost more than 40 Kwacha. There are the official blue coloured cabs which are numbered and anonymous freelance plain cabs. The plain cabs tend to be cheaper however only those visitors with experience should engage with these.

Ask at reception for a list of private freelance drivers known to the lodge who are are reliable, flexible and trustworthy.

    Taxi vans
If you feel like having a truly Zambian experience there are what are referred to as 'taxis' these are actually blue and white vans that manage to squeeze in up to 18 people! Before you get on board try to choose a van that looks in good condition, appears to be roadworthy and is definitely going your way...

There are frequent breakdowns and some accidents with the taxi vans (given the number of them on the roads this not surprising) and if being crammed in like a sardine does not appeal then give this a miss. On the upside the taxi vans are very cheap - Roma Arcades Shopping centre to Lusaka centre should not cost more than ZMW4 and they are fairly quick since the drivers tend to ignore general road rules and conditions. On the other hand you may have to wait at stops while the 'conductor' tries to fill the van with passengers by solicitation - Its all part of the experience!

    Exchange rate
The Zambian currency, the Kwacha, was re-based late 2012 by a factor of 1,000. The exchange rate fluctuates a lot so check the current rate. Click here to calculate a specific amount of exchange or to find out todays rate of Dollar to Kwacha. Remember that the international exchange rate actually may differ from the rate offered in Zambia.

    Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia. It is located in the southern part of the central plateau, at an elevation of about 1,300 metres (4,265 feet). It has a population of about 1.7 million (2010 census).

It is a commercial centre as well as the centre of government, and the four main highways of Zambia head north, south, east and west from it. The two main languages spoken in Lusaka are English and Nyanja (a Bantu language). English is the official language. Visit Wikipedia for more detailed information about Lusaka.

Lusaka has become something of a boom town of late. New buildings are going up everywhere and many chain stores and shopping malls are springing up all over.

The road development isn't quite keeping up so peak hour traffic is finally becoming like other cities, but it has an optimistic air of a town on the rise.

For many, this is the perfect example of what economic liberalisation has done for the country. Viewed from the villages, Lusaka is the glittering capital which still persuades rural Zambians to take the bus there in search of jobs and dreams.

Well over 60% of its 2 million inhabitants are unemployed, but there are surprisingly few beggars. Although petty theft occurs, most people try to make an honest living, selling their wares or services, always with a friendly smile.

For more detailed information visit the official Zambia Tourism website

Lusaka is a friendly, relaxed city with some interesting sights:

Lusaka National Museum - Zambian history, ethnography and contemporary art is on display.
Munda Wanga Environmental Park has an impressive botanical garden, wildlife sanctuary, and swimming pool.
Kalimba Reptile Park for your fill of snakes, crocodiles, tortoises, and chameleons. Sample a crocodile burger.
Kabwata Cultural Village for local handicrafts, lots of wood carvings to bargain for.
Markets - check out City Center and Soweto Markets and the monthly Kabulonga Market at The Dutch Reform Church or the Sunday crafts market at Arcades Shopping Center in Roma on Great East Rd.
